Helping Teachers Helps Students

The Hidden Cost of Teaching (HCT) Foundation seeks to offset some of the thousands of dollars teachers spend each year, of their own money, to buy the basic supplies they need to create and run a positive learning environment for their students.

Putting Teachers First

Public school teachers bear an extensive Hidden Cost of Teaching (HCT) which includes instructional materials, student supplies and required continuing professional development.  In fact, they spend an average of $1000 annually to supply their classrooms with these materials, the everyday supplies critical to supplementing those materials. Additionally, many teachers are required to pay for their own Masters Degrees, continuing professional development and recertifications.

Oftentimes, teachers are also paying for some of their students’ supplies. The direct financial burden for teachers is enormous.  It’s particularly significant for first-year teachers, teachers working in a new grade, and for those in Title 1 schools.

Direct instructional material funds vary by state, county, district and even school system; therefore teachers end up paying for everything between what is provided and what is needed for a successful classroom.

Molly McKelvey was a public school teacher for 30 years. Dedicated to her profession, her three adult children started The Hidden Cost of Teachers, on the 20th anniversary of her passing, because the McKelvey family believes that teachers shouldn’t have to choose between spending their money on either their own family or on their classrooms.

Through individual and corporate donations, The Hidden Cost of Teachers strives to offset the substantial out-of-pocket costs borne by teachers annually. Although Molly never complained about the cost, she talked about the financial and emotional burden this was creating for so many of her fellow teachers. If she were alive today, her children know she would be leading this cause.

At the end of the day, Molly knew Helping Teachers Helps Students.
